A Reflection…
Does anyone remember who they were five years ago? I do.
Would you care to share? I’ll start. I was an awkward teenager finishing my
senior year of high school in Apple Valley. I lived with my friend’s family,
slept on their couch and I was in danger of not graduating. A diamond in the
rough. So rough in fact, one might say I would never amount to much. Of course,
that is simply not the case today. But I’m not the only one who surfaced above
a statistic. I’m not the only one who made adversity their bitch. I’m not the
only one who continues to seek to understand their past. I’m not the only
balancing a million responsibilities at once. I’m not the only one who overcommits
in projects because I believe they will make a difference.
I am not special.
Those four words came to me today like pickle water to the
eye. They stung. Wait, is ‘am’ a word? Never mind that. Today I realized that the class of 2007
contains brave, intelligent, and relentless (and detail oriented for those
writing résumés) unique individuals.
(to be continued)
